The Kebbi State Police Command has rescued a newborn baby allegedly buried alive by her 20-year-old mother, Maryam Atiku, of Nasarawa area, Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Abubakar, the shocking incident occurred on June 25, 2025, when Maryam delivered a baby girl and attempted to end her life. She reportedly tied the infant’s neck with wrappers, covered her mouth, and buried her in a shallow grave at Malam Yaro bush.
The following day, June 26, a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, noticed a fresh grave on his farmland. Sensing something unusual, he raised an alarm that drew the attention of residents. Together, they exhumed the site and were astonished to find the baby alive.
The infant was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed her condition stable.
Police detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) quickly arrested Maryam Atiku, who reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, strongly condemned the act, stressing the command’s zero tolerance for child abuse and gender-based violence. He urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to prioritize the safety of children and never jeopardize their future.
The CP further commended the wife of the Kebbi State Governor, Hajiya Zainab Nasir, for supporting the welfare of the rescued child, and also lauded the swift intervention of Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, whose vigilance saved the baby’s life.
The suspect has since been arraigned in court and will face prosecution.
